Cape Town winter is brutal on cars. Between cold fronts rolling in from the Atlantic, heavy rain on Boyes Drive, and cold mornings in Parklands and Bloubergstrand, your car takes a battering from May through August. Here's exactly what to check — and when to call us if something's off.
1. Test Your Battery Before May
Cold weather is the biggest battery killer. If your battery is 3+ years old, get it tested before winter arrives. The number one call-out we get in June and July is dead batteries — usually at 6am on cold mornings when people are trying to get to work. A battery costs around R1,200-R2,500 depending on vehicle. Replacing it at the roadside in Sea Point after it dies costs the same — but you've missed your meeting and spent an hour stuck.
2. Check Your Windscreen Wipers Now
Cape rain doesn't mess around. If your wipers smear or streak, they're done. Fresh wipers cost R140-R280 per pair and are easy to replace. Driving up the N2 toward Somerset West in a winter downpour with worn wipers is genuinely dangerous.
3. Top Up Antifreeze / Coolant
Even Cape winter gets close to freezing in Durbanville and the Winelands. More importantly, coolant also prevents overheating in summer. Check your coolant reservoir — it should be between MIN and MAX. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot.
4. Tread Check — The R5 Coin Test
Insert a R5 coin into your tyre tread. If the gold ring of the coin is visible above the tread, your tyres are worn and dangerous in wet weather. Hydroplaning on Chapman's Peak or the M3 in the rain is a real risk with bald tyres. Legal minimum is 1.6mm but for wet winter driving 3mm is the safe minimum.
5. Service Your Brakes Before Winter Rain Arrives
Wet brakes take longer to stop. If your brakes are already worn, winter braking distances become dangerous. Grinding, squealing, or a soft pedal — get it checked immediately. We do mobile brake replacements in your driveway — labour at R750/hour, a typical pad job is about 2 hours.
6. Check All Lights
Winter = more driving in the dark. Walk around your car with headlights on and check headlights, brake lights, indicators and fog lights. A blown bulb is R30-R150 to replace — much cheaper than a traffic fine from a Cape Town Metro officer.
7. Watch Your Oil in Cold Weather
Cold oil is thicker and harder for your engine to pump. If your oil is old and dirty this effect is worse. If you're due for a service, do it before winter — fresh oil protects your engine during cold starts.
8. Emergency Kit for Your Boot
Cape winters mean you might get stuck somewhere — a cold front on the M3 causes chaos, and a breakdown on the N1 near Paarl in the rain is no joke. Keep: jumper cables, a torch, a warm blanket, water, a basic tool kit, and a high-visibility vest.
9. Keep Your Fuel Tank Above Half
Condensation builds up in empty tanks during cold weather, which can cause problems with the fuel system. Keep your tank at least half full in winter. Also — if you do get stuck in traffic on the N2 during a storm, you don't want fuel anxiety on top of it.
10. Book a Pre-Winter Check
