You don't need to be a mechanic to keep your car in good shape. These 5 checks take less than 10 minutes once a month and can catch problems before they become expensive.

1. Engine Oil Level

Pull out the dipstick, wipe it, dip it again, and check. Oil should be between the MIN and MAX marks. If it's low, top it up. If it's black and dirty, book a service.

2. Tyre Pressure

Under-inflated tyres wear faster, use more fuel, and are dangerous on wet winter roads. Check your door jamb for the correct pressure and top up at any petrol station. Do this when tyres are cold.

3. Coolant Level

Check the coolant reservoir under the bonnet. It should be between MIN and MAX. Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Low coolant leads to overheating, especially on hot summer drives to Somerset West.

4. Brake Fluid

The brake fluid reservoir is usually near the back of the engine bay. It should be between MIN and MAX. If it drops quickly, you may have a leak — get it checked.

5. Lights

Walk around your car with headlights on and check all lights work — headlights, indicators, brake lights. A blown brake light is a traffic fine waiting to happen, especially when CT Metro are around.
