- Tighter tolerances. A wheel bearing on a Toyota Hilux is forgiving. A wheel bearing on a BMW 3-Series is not — fit it 5mm out and you hear a hum at 80km/h. Most German parts are torque-critical too.
- Specific oils and fluids. Long-Life service oils, DSG fluids, specific brake fluid grades — using generic supermarket oil on a German engine is a quiet way to shorten its life.
- Electronic handshakes. Replace a brake pad on a recent BMW or Mercedes and the car needs the brake wear sensor reset electronically. Same with batteries (BMW battery registration). Skip this and warnings stay on the dash forever.
