Cape Town rain is different. A quick summer shower on hot tarmac creates an oil slick. A winter downpour on the N2 at night is genuinely dangerous. Here's how to drive safely on wet Cape roads.
The First 10 Minutes Are The Worst
When it first starts raining, oil and dust on the road rise to the surface. This is when roads are most slippery. If it hasn't rained for a while — slow down and take it easy for the first 10-15 minutes.
Double Your Following Distance
Wet roads double your stopping distance. If you normally leave 2 seconds between you and the car ahead, make it 4 seconds on wet roads. This gives you time to react and stop.
Watch For Aquaplaning
Aquaplaning is when your tyres lose contact with the road and skim over a layer of water. You lose all steering and braking control. Signs it's happening: steering feels light, the engine revs up slightly, you feel disconnected from the road.
What to do: Don't brake. Don't swerve. Ease off the accelerator and let the car slow naturally. Once you feel the tyres grip again, resume normal driving.
Use Your Lights (But Not Fog Lights)
Put your normal headlights on in heavy rain. Don't use fog lights unless visibility is truly poor — they dazzle other drivers and are illegal in normal rain.

- The M3: potholes fill with water making them invisible
- N2 near the airport: open road with side wind in storms
- Chapman's Peak: sometimes closed in heavy rain for safety
- Boyes Drive: rockfall risk in heavy rain
If Your Tyres Are Worn — Don't Drive In Heavy Rain
If your tread depth is below 3mm, wet roads are dangerous. Replace your tyres before winter. Budget around R800-R2,500 per tyre depending on size and quality.
Check Your Wipers
Can't see means can't drive. Worn wipers are a cheap fix — R140-R280 for a pair. Don't leave it until you're caught in a downpour on the N1 with smearing wipers.
