It's 6:15am, you're heading to work in Parklands or Observatory, and your car just clicks. Or worse — nothing at all. This is the most common winter call-out we get. Here's why it happens and what to do.

Why Cold Mornings Kill Batteries

Car batteries lose capacity in cold weather. A battery that's at 100% at 25°C is at about 80% at 5°C. If your battery is already weak, that 20% loss is enough to kill it. Cape Town doesn't get super cold, but pre-dawn in Durbanville in July can easily hit 4-5°C — cold enough to finish off a tired battery.

Signs Your Battery Is Dying Before It Fails

What To Do If Your Car Won't Start

Clicking sound but no start: Battery is likely dead. A jump-start may help but you probably need a new battery soon.

Completely silent, no dashboard lights: Could be battery, could be a loose terminal, could be a dead battery. Check if your interior lights work — if they're dim or dead, it's the battery.

Lights work, dashboard comes on, but engine doesn't crank: Could be starter motor, not the battery. Call us.

Can You Jump Start Yourself?

Yes, if you have jumper cables and a helpful neighbour. But a jump-start doesn't fix a dying battery — it just gets you going. Within a few days you'll have the same problem again, usually at the worst possible time.

Mobile Battery Replacement — How It Works

You send us your car make, model and location. We bring the correct battery to you. We remove the old one, fit the new one, check the charging system to make sure it's not an alternator problem causing the battery to fail, and you pay once it's done.

Typical cost: R1,200 - R2,500 for the battery (depending on make and model) + R450 Zone 1 call-out fee. No tow truck needed.

Why Not Just Go To Battery Centre?

You can — if your car is actually running. But if it won't start, you need to tow it there (R500+) or get someone to jump-start you. We come to you, bring the right battery, and fit it in your driveway. It's often cheaper overall and way less hassle.
