You're driving up the N1 toward Paarl on a 35°C February day and your temperature gauge is climbing into the red. Or you're stuck in traffic on the N2 and steam is coming from under the bonnet. Overheating is serious — ignore it and you could blow your engine.

Step 1: Pull Over Immediately

The moment the gauge hits the red zone, start looking for somewhere to pull over. Continuing to drive while overheating can crack your cylinder head or warp the engine block — an R30,000+ repair.

Step 2: Turn On The Heater (Seriously)

This sounds mad on a hot day but it works. Turning the heater on full blast pulls heat away from the engine. You'll be sweating, but you might save your engine. Then pull over as soon as safely possible.

Step 3: Turn The Engine Off

Once you've pulled over, turn the engine off immediately. Don't pop the bonnet yet — it's full of steam and will burn you.

Step 4: Wait. Seriously Wait.

Wait at least 30 minutes. An hour is better. Do NOT open the radiator cap while the engine is hot — boiling coolant will spray out and cause serious burns.

Step 5: Once Cool, Check Coolant Level

Check the coolant reservoir (the plastic tank near the radiator). If it's empty or very low, you have a leak or you've lost coolant through overheating.

Step 6: Can You Drive To Safety?

If the coolant is topped up and the engine hasn't been too hot for too long, you might be able to drive carefully to a safe spot. But if the overheating comes back quickly — stop. Call us.
